“The Disappeared Vineyard” Toledo, Spain

Natural wine can age perfectly, and this wondrous bottle contains a very good example of that. The nose is fairly discreet, misleading almost, as the palate reveals a deep and wide spectrum of flavours wrapped in a refreshing texture. black tea, orange peel and a slight touch of green apples. This bottle is as rare as they come; a 1998 vintage after which the vineyards that produced this wine have disappeared/uprooted from Guzqia. These are the last few bottles left. It would pair with a platter of bold, hard cheese and/or charcuterie. To be served chilled but not very cold.

INFO ON GROWER

Bodega Recuero, producing wine since 1873, is owned and run by Jesus Recuero who inherited the winery (bodega) from his ancestors along with a great passion for their vineyards in Villanueva De Alcardate, close to Toledo in Castilla La Mancha. Jesus, a trained agricultural engineer and oenologist, greatly cherish the knowledge and winemaking traditions that accumulated through the years and passed down to him by his father and grandfather. Guzqia, the vineyard in Alcardate, along with another vineyard in Extremadura contain age-old vines of endemic grape varieties; some of whom almost completely forgotten, such as Moravia, Airen del Pais, Verdoncho, Albillo Pardo, Pinuelo (a strain of Granache), Verdejo Serrena (Rufeta Blanca), Palomino and a few others. The wines are purely and carefully elaborated to create truly magnificent results. We are very happy to be able to bring these wines to the UK and hope you try them.

1 review for Guzqia 1998

This is a stunning wine. We took a gamble because we were tempted by the description and the scarcity and it paid off. Notes of honey, apricot, brandy, oak. Bright and dry but with the most subtle sweet notes without being sweet. Phenomenal and complex. Definitely better to be cold but not very chilled as the flavour comes alive..so glad we bought this!
